Dr. Keegan was born and raised in Missouri . He graduated from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine in 1983 and spent his first 3 postgraduate years in private equine practice in Maryland and Delaware . In 1989 he completed a 3-year equine surgery residency and Master of Science degree at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign , Illinois . While completing the Master of Science degree Dr. Keegan received training in statics and dynamics, experimental stress analysis, biomedical instrumentation and signal processing. After completing this surgery residency Dr. Keegan returned to private practice outside Detroit , Michigan , specializing in equine surgery and lameness. He returned to the University of Missouri in 1990 as a clinical instructor, was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1991 and to Associate Professor in 1998. Dr. Keegan is board certified in the American College of Veterinary Surgery. His primary research interest is using computer-assisted gait analysis to diagnose lameness in horses. He is a member of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association, The American Association of Equine Practitioners and the American Veterinary Medical Association.
